Tikkun Olam- Repairing the World
The expression Tikkun Olam is used in the Misnah in the phrase mip'nei tikkun ha-olam- "for the sake of tikkun (repairing) of the world"- to indicate that a practice should be followed not because it is required by Biblical law, but because it helps avoid social chaos. Tikkun Olam focuses on the Jewish and basic human responsibilty to help make the world a better place by the actions we take and decisions we make in our lifetime.
It is so important in Jewish tradition that it is included in a prayer made 3 times a day.
Israel and Israelis exhibit Tikkun Olam by sending out rescue missions with expert doctors and supplies to all corners of the world after disasters such as hurricanes and earhquakes, sending delegations to teach and train farmers in third world countries in new agricultural technolgies, maintaining programs such as "Save a Child's Heart", an Israeli based humanitarian project, aimed at providing pediatric cardiatric care for children from developing cocuntries who suffer from heart disease, that has treated and saved the lives of many children from all over the world including Arab countries hostile to Israel.
